When Your School Year Pivots Before It Even Gets Started
Well, we’re only three weeks into the school year, and guess what? We’re already pivoting!
As a homeschool mom leading a large nonprofit organization, I like to think I’ve learned a little about planning ahead. So last spring, I carefully chose our science and math curricula—checked all the boxes, made the lists, prepped the books and binders. We were all set. Our family was going to dive into Astronomy this fall, exploring the stars together with a unit study-based curriculum I was actually excited about.
But then… high school happened. 😅
My high schooler and I sat down, and after a few weeks of trying to make the family-style science work, it became clear: he was craving something more independent and academically challenging. Turns out, he’s not feeling the star charts and constellation maps. He wants Chemistry. On his own. From a textbook. And honestly? I’m kind of proud of him.
So here we are—Astronomy plans gently shifted to just the little brother for a fall only abbreviated version, and Chemistry books already underway. (Thanks to the used options Unite had on hand at affordable pricing!) It’s not what I expected, but it’s exactly what he needs.
And that’s the beauty of homeschooling, right? We can pivot. We can listen to our kids, adjust, and find the path that helps them thrive—even if it means changing course just a few weeks in.
To anyone else finding themselves rethinking, reshuffling, or totally restarting something this early in the year: you’re not alone. Flexibility isn’t failure—it’s a superpower.
Here’s to unexpected turns and the freedom to follow them. 🚀🧪✨
